"I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" was Aerosmith's first number one song. It spent four week on the top position of the US Hot 100 in 1998, was one of the most popular songs of that year, introduced Aerosmith to a new generation, and helped the band return to radio programmes.
Songwriter Diane Warren drew the inspiration for this song from the interview with Barbra Streisand and her soon-to-be husband actor James Brolin, when Streisand told about one of their nights together, "And we're just about to fall asleep. And he says, 'I don't want to fall asleep.' And so I said, 'Why not?' And he says, 'Because then I'll miss you.'"
The author of this song Diane Warren originally saw this song as a soft one with keyboard-based melody, which could be suitable for Celine Dion.
U2 could perform this song for the soundtrack, but Aerosmith was asked to do this after Steve Tyler's daughter Liv Tyler had been chosen to play in the film.
Aerosmith recorded this song during their tour with the album "Nine Lives" (1997) when they were asked to see the film and offered to make a song for it. Aerosmith's guitarist Joe Perry explained to Classic Rock magazine in 2002, "We do wish that we'd had a little more time, so that we could have had a shot at writing it, but it was perfect timing. The song was great, people loved it, and I don't think people care that much who wrote it."
The "Armageddon" soundtrack also contained another new song of the band called "What Kind of Love Are You On" which was recorded during the session for the "Nine Lives" album but wasn't included in the album.
The music video was the second best video of 1998. It shows the band performing the song mixed with the film scenes.
