Fixer Upper: The Lakehouse Renovation and Overcoming Fears (2024)

Joanna Gaines bravely tried to overcome her fear of horse riding on Sunday’s episode of Fixer Upper: The Lakehouse on HGTV.

The 46-year-old interior designer went horseback riding at her friend Kristen’s farm amid the lake house renovation with her husband Chip, 49.

‘My whole life, I’ve been terrified of horses. I’ve had horses since I’ve been married to Chip, but I’ve seen them kind of get a little squirrelly,’ Joanna said in a confessional.

‘Seeing Chip get bucked off a horse, seeing one of my kids get bucked off a horse, that is enough fear for me to go, “Okay, that’s real”,’ added Joanna, who has five children with Chip.

Kristen encouraged Joanna to try and find her rhythm and told her to go a little faster.

‘Faster? Oh, gosh,’ Joanna said.

Joanna told the camera that she was trying to get comfortable on a horse so her fear would exit ‘stage left’.

She was grateful that Kristen had her on Fancy, a nearly 20-year-old horse.

‘Me and Fancy think a lot alike. Well, you know, we’re a little older. We wanna kind of be a little more retired,’ Joanna said.

Kristen coached Joanna on turning and then Fancy parked herself.

‘Is she not going?,’ Kristen asked.

‘Fancy and I are feeling the same thing. We like this position,’ Joanna said.

Kristen advised her to move her hands forward as the lesson continued.

‘Like that idea of… you know, losing control, but gaining this sense of like, groundedness and control in the midst of that, is what I feel like I’m trying to conquer on this horse,’ Joanna said in a confessional.

After getting her foot stuck in a stirrup, Joanna dismounted with a newfound confidence.

‘Now that I’m off the horse, I’m like, I can do this. I can figure this out. So, I sense fear leaving my gut and kind of sitting on my shoulder now. And then, next week, I think it’s gonna fly off. That’s the hope,’ she said.

‘Good job, Fancy. You did good,’ Joanna told the horse after her ride.

The episode opened on Week 13 of the lake house renovation that Chip and Joanna took on to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of their home renovation series.

The Fixer Upper pilot aired in 2013 and its first full season started in April 2014.

‘We’ve finally finished hanging all the drywall throughout the entire house. We started tiling some of the bathrooms. And we’ve also finished building those shelves in the living room,’ Chip said.

‘For us, when we see drywall, we’re like, “Okay, all the mechanical, all that’s done. Now, it’s time for the pretty stuff”,’ Joanna said in a confessional with Chip.

The episode showed Chip enjoying the use of heavy machinery as he took down an unnecessary fence in the backyard.

Joanna also had him hold up options as she considered the right color for the gutters on the front of the house.

Chip promised to get a quote for her preferred option of ‘shiny new penny’ and later revealed the quote was $5,000 for the whole house.

Joanna decided to clean up the gutters just in the courtyard near the koi pond area to save money and Chip figured it would cost only $1,500.

She later did not like the pink look of the gutters and considered her options.

‘He’s gonna think I’m crazy, but I’m back to, maybe, wanting to save some money and not look like I put pink gutters up next to my green trim,’ she said.

Chip gave her eight options for stain options and she picked the one closest to the original stain color in the house.

Joanna also was impressed by the volcanic ash tile in the recreation room for its organic feel and called it her new favorite room in the house.

They also admired the bathroom and Joanna called it a ‘showstopper’.

‘This feels like a boutique hotel,’ Joanna said.

Fixer Upper: The Lakehouse will return next week on HGTV.

Chip and Joanna last week made their return to HGTV on the premiere episode of Fixer Upper: The Lakehouse.

The six-episode series follows their flipiing of property overlooking Lake Waco.

The property is a five-bedroom, five-bath, 5,100-square-foot home that sits on 1.5 acres with a backyard pool.

Chip last week cleared some trees to provide a ‘million-dollar view’ for the next residents.
