Since opening its foreboding front doors atDisneyland Parkin 1969,the Haunted Mansionand the lore surrounding it has captured the mortal hearts of Disney Parks goers, inspiring three subsequent attractions, multiple film adaptations, merchandise lines and plans for a soon-to-debut bar onboard theDisney Treasure. Plans forthe Haunted Mansion Parlorwill honor more than five decades of fandom and introduce the world to the next chapter of the Haunted Mansion saga.
Disney Cruise Line and Disney Imagineers will harness the power of design to convey the nostalgia of the original attraction alongside a new nautical storyline. The venue will resemble a well-appointed ship parlor, which once belonged to ajovial sea captainand his strange, but captivating fiancé. With so many rumors swirling about, it’s hard to say what happened to the happy couple following their sudden and mysterious disappearances – but our most discerning guests may glean the truth by deciphering clues hidden around the bar.
As part of the Halfway to Halloween celebration, it’s my ghoulish delight to be your guide to unlocking a few of Haunted Mansion Parlor’s secrets.
Something Seems Fishy About This Aquarium
When plans for the original Haunted Mansion attraction at Disneyland were well underway, celebrated Disney ImagineerRolly Crumpproposed a creative concept for a “Museum of the Weird” exhibit. As the final design took shape, many of Rolly’s initial ideas were realized throughout the attraction. However, a few of his concepts remained in the vault, living on thanks to dedicated fans and Disney historians. One such concept was a mysterious aquarium, filled with ghost fish. More than fifty years later, the sketch Rolly developed was referenced by a new generation of Disney Imagineers to create a modern “Aquarium with Ghost Fish” for the Haunted Mansion Parlor.
Blending nostalgia with a fresh layer of lore, the aquarium will fold into the curious backstory of the parlor’s former sea captain owner. Legends passed down from The Captain’s devoted crew recount how he was last seen heading to his parlor for a special meal prepared by his betrothed. All that remained after The Captain and his bride seemingly vanished was his hat, which was found floating in the aquarium tank. Perhaps his disappearance grants a new meaning to “fish food.”
An Eerie Art Collection
The Haunted Mansion Parlor’s eerie portrait gallery will depict some of the wandering souls that have taken up residence onboard the Disney Treasure. The collection of works will be reminiscent of the quintessential paintings inside the Haunted Mansion attraction, mimicking the art stylings used by Disney Imagineers in 1969. The portrait gallery will also incorporate present-day technologies to allow the ghostly residents to entertain guests in new ways.
I’m delighted to introduce you to a few of the happy haunts that will call the Disney Treasure home…
The concept for The Mariner was created by famed Disney animator Marc Davis. The portrait first occupied the halls of the original Haunted Mansion attraction and later made its way to the attractions atWalt Disney World ResortandTokyo Disney Resort. The Mariner’s story will be taken to new depths when he takes his place in the Haunted Mansion Parlor on the Disney Treasure and continues to uphold Marc Davis’ impactful legacy.
A distinguished portrait of the good-humored sea captain will also grace the walls of the Haunted Mansion Parlor. His lifelong dream of serving on a luxury ocean liner was cut short after his untimely demise, but his merry soul has lingered on in his private parlor.
The likeness of The Captain’s enigmatic bride-to-be will take cues from Marc Davis’ iconic “cat lady” concept, which was also featured in the original attraction. Inside the Haunted Mansion Parlor, her portrait will flicker to reveal her true form and perhaps, her true intentions.
Tales of the doomed couple’s first encounter all began when The Captain received a dramatic distress transmission from another vessel. He wasted no time in altering his course to aid in the rescue, but as he neared the source of the call, he found only a mangled wreckage and a lone survivor – a woman floating amongst the debris. With bright green eyes, chestnut hair and a golden key hanging about her neck, it is no wonder that The Captain was immediately taken by her beauty. The pair became inseparable and were soon engaged to be wed.
A Ghostly Line of Drinkware
The portraits inside Haunted Mansion Parlor will also lend inspiration to a Disney Cruise Line-exclusive commemorative mug collection that will debut onboard the Disney Treasure. The ceramic mugs will appear to be carved from the worn wooden planks of a ghost ship. These early sketches and models illustrate the first in a series coming to the Disney Treasure – one inspired by The Mariner and other by The Captain’s bride.
The Haunted Mansion Parlor will begin welcoming foolish mortals when the Disney Treasure sets sail on itsmaiden voyage on Dec. 21.

Disneyland has about three months to finish the Haunted Mansion renovation if the Anaheim theme park hopes to open the classic dark ride by the start of Halloween Time 2024 on Aug. 23 at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.

The Haunted Mansion at Disneyland is getting a new garden in the outdoor queue. Construction begins in January 2024. The ride queue itself is set to be completely overhauled, with additional theming and more interactive elements to keep guests entertained as they wait to board their Doom Buggy.
In August 2023, Disney Parks Blog announced that the Anaheim, Calif. resort's iconic attraction would close in January 2024 in order to “expand on the story and lore of the Haunted Mansion” ride located in New Orleans Square.
You may have heard about the house of horrors on the news or social media over the years, but we're going to dive into the full story of Russ McKamey and McKamey Manor. The haunted attraction, founded by Russ McKamey in San Diego, CA, has been operation for years, and still has a cult-following of loyal fans.
According to the Disneyland Park Daily Schedule, the Haunted Mansion will be Closed for Refurbishment beginning January 22, 2024. I'm afraid that we don't have a projected end date for this project, but I would recommend that you keep following the Disney Parks Blog for news and updates.
People who have experienced McKamey Manor have shared truly horrifying accounts of what has allegedly taken place from near drowning and possibly being buried alive to much worse. While there is a safe word, people have claimed that it's pretty much useless and the experience isn't over until McKamey says it is.
The coffin occupant is the basis and inspiration for the mausoleum scene in the 2003 film. In this adaption, the character is condensed as one of the zombies. This zombie being found within a stone sarcophagus in the mausoleum, is in possession of a key needed by Jim Evers.
In the film, a man named Alistair Crump (Jared Leto) is behind all the hauntings and mysterious deaths. He killed party guests and servants alike in his own mansion, Crump Manor, until the staff revolted and chopped his head off. Crump's ghost shows up in Master Gracey's mansion after Leota accidentally summons him.
Justin Simien's Haunted Mansion remake ends with a final showdown between the living characters and Alistair Crump, the dark magic-using ghost who aims to claim his 1000th soul during the full moon. Alistair, otherwise known as the Hatbox Ghost, had attempted to lure Ben to death, preying on his grief.
There's also allegedly a scene where an evil spirit takes over Bruce's body is “very scary for younger viewers.” The film also reportedly contains profanity this includes one character who says “d*mn” and several characters who use the word “G*d.”
In the original Disneyland variant of the attraction, Little Leota can be seen in the Exit Crypt when guests are on a moving up-ramp. Within the flooded mausoleum, the diminutive ghost of Little Leota can be seen urging guests to, "Hurry back" while telling them to "Remember to bring your death certificates".
Madame Leota (Eleanor Audley as her voice, Leota Toombs as her face), a blue-haired medium whose disembodied head appears within a levitating crystal ball, summons the Mansion's spirits.
Haunted Mansion officially closed for refurbishment as of January 21st, 2024, and we can expect this closure to last a little longer than we'd like. While all the holiday overlay theming will obviously be coming out of the ride during this closure, more extensive projects will also be just beginning.
February 27, 2024 Update: Haunted Mansion Holiday closed for refurbishment on January 22 and work began on the reimagined grounds, expanded outdoor queue, and new gift shop almost immediately thereafter. Walls are now up around the impacted area of New Orleans Square.
The Haunted Mansion typically closes for two and half weeks in late August so it can be converted into the Haunted Mansion Holiday. The overlaid attraction is then open to guests from September through early January before being closed again to remove the overlay.
