Pathfinder Society Scenario #2-02: Mountain of Sea and Sky (2024)

I love paizo's oriental scenarios, the tragedy of the chase in The Haunting of Hinojai, the Akira Kurosawa vibe from Red Harvest, the Clash in Kaimuko Wood where I participated as a blind Aasimar Paladin... (I never thought such a coincidence would happen!)

In the 2nd edition, I had a great time improvising and incorporating the Kingdom of Zao setting into the scenario in the undead route of Lost on the Spirit Road.

As for this scenario, which is the main topic... As soon as I read it, I knew it was a combination of Princess Mononoke and Doraemon : Nobita and the Birth of Japan!

Role-playing Masuhei, an oyster fisherman and retired Pathfinder, was a joy. sakakabe is a place where everyone knows Amara Li's favorite restaurant, Kiniro Kyomai, but the moment players learned that the local specialty is oysters, they started talking about eating oyster dishes after their adventure.

The main stage of the adventure, kayajima, is named after Kayanohime in Japanese mythology, which is also called Nozuchikami, or wild spirit. Kayanohime is also called Nozuchikami, or Wild Spirit, and her husband is called Ooyamatsumi, or Kami, originally a mountain god, but with deep ties to the sea, as his head office is located on an island. For these reasons, I thought the name "Kayajima" was an appropriate placement.

As has been said in previous reviews, yes. Our playgroup had played Devil at the Crossroads just before, so our first encounter was exactly the same. But the situation itself, fighting a wild boar in the woods, contributed to incorporating the atmosphere of the motif of this scenario.

The interaction with Kukuha, my new friend, is also excellent. She is an expert in ley lines, and the scene where she sets up the warding in the final battle was a lot of fun. I hope you will continue to publish scenarios where we interact with her in new lodges in the future. Just a map to give us a bird's eye view of the entire Kayajima would have been perfect.

The part where they go to the Forest's Heart Gate was totally Princess Mononoke. The interaction with Kodama is fun, hilarious, and the final scene is touching.

Aojimitsu, whom you meet at the Wrathful Tide Gate, was adored by the players due to the illustrations and his personality.
He is like Dorako in Draemon.

At Soruseiji Peak, the decision to cross the bridge seemed a bit redundant. It might break the tempo of the game, so you need to be careful. Griffon, who is to be saved from WIND MALEVOLENT (kamaitachi) here, is in Doraemon's position of Guri!
When we played, there was an ORACLE of TSUUKIYO, so she placed the diamonds at the top shrine.

The final battle with KAYAJIMA GUARDIAN DOGU, when using Ley Line Surge, I played a clip of the scene where Tsuchidama releases the shockwave in Doraemon:Nobita and the Birth of Japan. The scene was greatly enhanced by the island creatures coming to join the fight... The encounter ended earlier than expected due to a series of critical hits by the players. Completely bad dice roll! Thanks to that, the encounter ended before Aojimitsu came to join in and he sulked: .... That's cute, though!

When the adventure was over, I played the ending music for Nobita and the Birth of Japan, and the PCs enjoyed oysters at Sakakabe with Masuhei as promised, only a little disappointed that Kukuha stayed on the island and could not eat oysters with them.

This scenario was a wonderful adventure, the atmosphere, setting, and encounters were all exciting, and I can't wait for Minkai's setting book in 2e! Biggest kudos to the author, Adrian Ng. Thank you!

I loved them all, and so did my players!

The boars in the beginning!
Why is there a boar encounter here? This is a second scenario where there is just a random boar attack in the beginning.
Boars are cool an' all but no.

The encounter serves no purpose for the plot. It is just a filler and an unnecessary timesink.

The scenario itself offers so many wonderful roleplaying opportunities and plot relevant and cool encounters (fight and social) that easily fill the 4 hour playtime and more!
