Permanent Events You Can’t Do Again in NieR Replicant Remaster (2024)

The remaster of the original NieR Replicant is soon to arrive. While the first release of the game mostly went under the radar, the huge success of its sequelNieR Automata brought increased interest (and some confusion) about the first game’s lore and status. While the remaster is meant to be faithful to its namesake, with designer Yoko Taro’s history of surprises there is a high likelihood that NieR Replicant Remaster holds secrets and Easter Eggs for veteran players.

A staple of the series are the permanent repercussions of past events. This comes in the form of quests, lore, and powers that can only be experienced once. If they are missed by players, they will not only need to restart a fresh save file but may also need to wipe their system. This can be daunting at times, as many of these quests can grant special items and other rewards.

Missable Events in NieR Replicant Remaster

Permanent Events You Can’t Do Again in NieR Replicant Remaster (1)

NieR Replicant Remaster is broken up into two main sections: childhood, followed by a time skip leading to adulthood. Childhood can only be played once on a given profile, and a full name reset will be needed to experience it again. Adulthood has certain events that play out only once, and even going through new game plus mode will drastically alter them, including endings.

Childhood Events

Childhood has a completely separate set of side quests that must be completed before the time skip. They are in three main hubs: the Village, Seafront, and Facade. Quests give items, money and/or experience points that make them worth doing. It is especially important to do everything within the Aerie, as the area will become a dead zone shortly after completing Junk Heap. Side quests that are started but not completed will linger in the menu without a way to remove them. The 36 available quests include:

  • A Dog Astray: find the old man’s dog in the Northern Plans
  • A Return of Shopping: bring the florist three Bounty Fertilizers from Seafront
  • Boar Hunt: defeat the boar mini-boss in Northern Plains
  • Book Smarts: sort and rearrange various books in the Village library
  • Fragile Delivery: deliver a package to the highest point of the Aerie
  • Fragile Delivery 2: deliver a package to the tavern in Seafront
  • Fragile Delivery 3: deliver a package to Facade’s weapon shop
  • Herbal Remedies: bring two Medical Herbs from Northern Plains to Popola
  • Old Fashioned Home Cooking: Bring ten pieces of mutton to the woman near the Village fountain
  • On The Wings of the Eagles: bring an Eagle Egg from the Aerie to the tavern
  • Shopping List: bring three Tulip Bulbs from Seafront to the Village florist
  • The Ballad of the Twins: listen to the duet sung by Devola and Popola. Popola will ask for several items around Seafront
  • The Gatekeepers Errand: speak to the blacksmith’s wife
  • The Lost Eggs: bring a Chicken Egg near the fountain to the tool shop
  • The Runaway Son: find the lost son in Seafront post office, who will request mutton and goat. Return to his father in Village and then back to Seafront. The son will run away to Facade, and then into the desert where he must be saved from wolves.
  • The Travel Keeper’s Gift: bring Medical Herbs, Berries, and Royal Ferns to the tavern keeper
  • Yonah’s Gift: give a melon, watermelon, and pumpkin to Yonah
  • Yohnah’s Home Cooking: given wheat and venison to Yonah
  • A Signature Dish: bring Wheat, Sardines, and Medical Herbs to the Seafront tavern
  • The Belated Letter: deliver a letter to the Aerie and defeat the Shade that spawns when attempting to leave the area
  • Bon Appetit: bring a cookbook from the library to the tavern. The owner will then ask for Bags of Rice, Sharks, and Mushrooms
  • Bon Appetit 2: bring the tavern owner more Bags of Rice and Catfish
  • Closure: talk to the Seafront Postman
  • The Fisherman’s Gambit: catch Sardines with Lugworms
  • The Fisherman’s Gambit 2: catch Blowfish with Lugworms
  • The Fisherman’s Gambit 3: catch Rainbow Trout with a Lure
  • The Fisherman’s Gambit 4: catch Bream with a Lure
  • The Fisherman’s Gambit 5: catch Black Bass with a Lure
  • The Lighthouse Lady’s Wrath: solve a puzzle within the post office’s backroom
  • The Pride of the Lover: bring a Flourite from Facade to the man near the lighthouse
  • The new Merchant in Town: bring Wool, Natural Rubber, and Goat Hides to the ship docked in Seafront
  • The Postman’s Request: bring a letter from the Postman to the old woman in the lighthouse
  • Apology from a Fool: collect Wolf Hides for the Facade shopkeeper
  • Item Unknown: give a Watermelon to the woman searching for “round, stripped food objects”
  • The Littlest Hero: Head into the desert and rescue the weapon shopkeeper’s child from wolves
  • The Missing Girl: Look for the bloodstain at the bottom level of Facade. Then, exit to the desert and search the sand fountain
  • A Tangled Message: pass exact messages from one NPC to another, like a game of telephone

Additionally, it may be a good idea to collect all Words used to enhance weapons, magic, and martial arts. If they are not gained in childhood, they will no longer be available by killing shades and become locked behind the adulthood quest The Magical Stone.

First Adulthood Events

During the first time through adulthood, the narrative will still closely follow Nier’s perspective. However, attempting a New Game Plus will shift the focus onto other characters, like Kaine, Emil, and even shade enemies; including a full translation of the shades’ muddled language. The first time completing adulthood is also the only time when Ending A is accessible, as it will no longer occur in subsequent playthroughs.

The first adulthood also has some exclusive Word enhancements that will no longer be obtainable in new game plus. It is a good idea to farm all of them on the field before challenging the final boss. It is also important to clear out all side quests that unlock Words, especially The Magical Stone from the Forest of Myth. While the quest can’t be repeated, it will still allow access to childhood Words during New Game Plus.

New Game Plus Events

New Game Plus will at first seem like a spruced-up version of the adulthood sections, however, it will also greatly change the possible endings and mechanics. Ending B will only ever play once. While Ending C can be watched an infinite amount of times, Ending D will permanently erase all save files (including profile names used by other potential users of the same console or PC) and bar the use of the same profile name again.

However, when the deletion is triggered it will only scan saves that are currently on the system. Players who want to preserve their progress can cheat the process by copying or moving save files ahead of time. The restrictions on names can also be lifted by deleting NieR Replicant Remaster’s user data. While this may go against the game’s narrative spirit, it still ensures players can strengthen their character through countless battles.
