They were referred to in the NHL as the "Second Six" back in 1967, the six teams that were part of the first major expansion of the National Hockey League 33 years ago.

That Second Six is well represented in the second round of the 2000 Stanley Cup playoffs. Four of them are still alive Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, St. Louis and Dallas (originally the Minnesota Northstars). A fifth member, the LA. Kings went out in the first round.

The sixth member, the California Golden Seals, folded 22 years ago as the Cleveland Barons. Of the eight semifinalists, two are from the Original Six -Toronto and Detroit. Seven of the last nine Stanley Cup winners are still alive this season, including the winners of the last five. New Jersey, Colorado, Detroit (twice) and Dallas will all be playing in the second round. Twenty-five years ago it appeared that the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers would meet in the conference semifinals, as they are this season.

Eack in 1 975, the Penguins led the New York Islanders three games to none before the Isles, making their postseason debut, rebounded to win the next four and advance. In the second round that year, the Flyers got up three games to none only to have New York rebound again to force a game seven. The Flyers eventually won that series on their way to the Stanley Cup. "For all parties involved, it's best to get it off the front pages," Carter said Tuesday after practice, Carter sued Camby on Friday, two days before the teams opened the playoffs against each other, because the ex-Toronto forward called him a "liar" and said many players don't like him. Camby claimed he was traded to the Knicks just days after Carter promised to build the Raptors around him. Told that Carter had dropped the lawsuit, Camby said he had other things on his mind. "It didn't really affect me when it was brought out," he said.

"So all I'm worried about is Game 2." Belgian Wauters top pick in WNBA draft JNEW YORK (AP) Ann Wauters, considered the best prospect in Europe, and Tausha Mills, a "female Shaq," were the top two picks in the WNBA draft. Wauters, a 6-foot-4 center from Belgium, was the No. 1 pick by the Cleveland Rockers. Unlike last year when Chamique Holdsclaw was the consensus No. 1, the relatively weak draft featured no dominant player.

Stars on the national championship Connecticut and runner-up Tennessee teams are all juniors. "I'm very excited to come to America," Wauters said. "It's a very different game than in Europe, it's very aggressive." Mills, a 1998 graduate of Alabama, also played for the Chicago Condors of the ABL. She will join former SEC rivals Nikki McCray and Holdsclaw on the Washington Mystics. Post players were at a premium in the four-round, 64-player draft, making up half of the 16 first-round picks.

The league expands to 16 teams this season, adding franchises in Miami, Indiana, Seattle and Portland, Ore. Eight college seniors, five international players and three former ABL players were chosen in the first round. Four-time Olympian Teresa Edwards chose not to play in the league for the second consecutive season. CNBC to take over Senior broadcasts The Senior PGA Tour is about to change to a new time on a new network. Tim Finchem on Tuesday announced a four-year deal with business cable network CNBC, in which 33 tournaments from the 50-and-over circuit will be shown in an early evening time slot so they won't overlap with the PGA Tour.

"This is really a merger of two extremely compatible audiences," Finchem said in a conference call. "We often talk about the relationship between golf and business. This takes that relationship to new levels." The deal, effective in 2001, eliminates ESPN as a broadcast outlet for the Senior Tour. ESPN, which reaches 77 million households, had carried the Senior Tour since 1982 but said it could not commit to nearly three dozen tournaments. ESPN is showing 24 Senior events this year.

Beathard retires as San Diego Chargers' GM By BERNIE WILSON Associated Press SAN DIEGO -Now Bobby Beathard has more time to surf. He always looked like a beach boy, anyway. Beathard, who buillfSuper Bowl teams on both coasts iii his 37-year NFL career and lives the Southern California lifestyle to the max, retired as general manager of the San Diego Chargers onTuesday even though he thinks the team will return to the playoffs.

Beathard, who had a hand in seven Super Bowl teams' in jobs ranging from scout to GM, got emotional as he talked about how scouts and coaches spend so much time away from their families. "It's a sacrifice, and the reasons I'm doing this are all the right reasons," Beathard said at a news conference. "I want to spend more time with them. It's sad for me, but I'm excited. I'm looking forward to it." True to his style, Beathard didn't bother getting dressed up for his farewell.

He wore a blue Chargers polo shirt, gray shorts and running shoes. At 63, he's still an avid surfer and runner. And he put a bit of pressure on an organization that floundered for most of the second half of his 10 years at the helm. "I think they're going to make the playoffs," said Beathard, who had two years left on his contract. "But I'll have fun.

I'll be sitting up there drinking a beer and watching the game. And I'll be thrilled to death for them. I think they're a criticism in recent years over manju-I of his player acquisitions. One of legacies will be mortgaging the club's future in order to take quarterback Ryan Leaf with the second overall pick in the 1998 draft. Leaf has been nothing but trouble to the Chargers, both on off the field.

In November, Leaf cursed Beathard, drawing a four-game suspension. Beathard said Leafs escapades didn't lead to him leaving with two years left on his contract. "Oh, God no. Hey, look, those things are unfortunately part of the game. I'll still be rooting for him to pull it together.

There are too many" neat guys with this organization to have anything like that run me he said. great group of guys." Chargers president Dean Spanos chose not to name a GM to replace Beathard. Instead, Ed McGuire, who handles all contract negotiations and keeps tabs on the salary cap, was named vice president of football operations. He will continue to oversee contract negotiations as well as the day-today business and administrative operations of the scouting and coaching departments. Player personnel director Billy Devaney will take over the responsibility of all player acquisitions.

If the Chargers want to trade first-round draft picks like Beathard did so often and with controversial results, that will become Devaney's call. Beathard came under increasing Dorn oi Las vegas, were arrested Monday on warrants trom Lee County charging them with violating Alabama's sports agent law. Police said authorities were continuing to seek Colleen Preiss, 49, also of Las Vegas. She has been described in news accounts as the person who actually provided $500 and $2,000 money orders for Porter. i Todd Marlnovlch, a backup quarterback for the new Los Angeles Avengers of the Arena Football League, was arrested at practice Tuesday on a felony sexual assault charge.

Marinovich, 30, was taken into custody without incident at West Los Angeles College in Culver City, slid Sgt. Norine Plett of the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department, i After working with his father at Arkansas for 10 years, Nolan Richardson III waited a few extra minutes to officially leave his staff. Tennessee State introduced the younger Richardson as its new coach Tusday, delaying the news conference nearly 40 minutes until his father and family arrived from Arkansas. Martina Navratllova, retired since November 1994, will enter tliei women's doubles draw at Wimbledon, her spokeswoman said Tuesday. Navratilova, a nine-time singles champion at Wimbledon, will play with South Africa's Mariaan de Swardt at the tournament which runs June 26 to July 9, said Linda Dozoretz.
