Mrs. Best was a daughter of the late Ezra and Rosa Lancast- er Burnette. She was preceded in death by her husband, Talmadge O. Best; grandson, Joshua Best; sister, Rilla B.

Best SEPTEMBER 5, 1932 JULY 11, 2012 CHAPEL HILL Miriam Russell Murdock, age 93, died Monday, June 18, 2012, at Carolina Meadows re- tirement community in Chapel Hill, NC.
Miriam was born September 2, 1919, in Buffalo, New York, to Frederick Daniel and Clara (Gersman) Russell. She was the sister of the late Dr. Raymond Alvin Russell, Ph.D. She was married to the late Dr. Harold Russell Mur- dock Ph.D., for 55 years.
Miriam graduated from Westminster College, New Wilmington, PA in 1940 as valedictorian of her class, and pursued graduate studies at the University of Rochester. Dur- ing her career, she worked as a medical technologist and as- sisted in publishing research on strains of E. coli bacteria in 1952. From early childhood Miriam had a talent for writing poems and she retained an interest in poetry and accomplished writ- ing throughout her life. Her admiration of the natural world led to involvement in multiple environmental concerns.
She and Harold were married in 1950 and began their family in 1956. Miriam was dearly ap- preciated as a loving and devot- ed mother and housewife. During their retirement years, the Murdocks volun- teered for many charitable causes. Miriam was instrumen- tal in founding the recycling programs at Carolina Mead- ows. Miriam is survived by her three children: Frederick Rus- sell Murdock of Silver Spring, M.D., David Harold Murdock of Raleigh, NC, and Sara Jane Hart.
Sara and her husband Richard are missionaries with SIM (Serving in Mission) in Cochabamba, Bolivia, South America and have two chil- dren, Daniel and David. Daniel is a sophom*ore at Cedarville University near Dayton, Ohio. Also surviving are two neph- ews. Marie em- bodied the best attributes of a loving wife, kind mother, and faith- ful Christian, and she will be missed by her family, friends, and anyone that knew her joy- ful spirit. Marie was born near Salem- burg, NC, in Sampson County and spent her early childhood working the family farm with her brothers and sisters.
A graduate of Salemburg High, one of her jobs outside of the farm was as a switchboard operator at Camp Davis near Holly Ridge, NC in Onslow County during World War II. Soon after the conclusion of the war, Marie met and mar- ried the love of her life, George Cleophas Davis. They wed on May 15, 1947, and soon moved to Raleigh, NC, a pioneering leap of faith for a young mar- ried couple from rural Amer- ica. Within two years, Marie became a nurturing and patient mother. She instilled in her three sons a sense of compas- sion for others, a strong work ethic, and a sense of humor.
As her sons grew, Marie returned to the work force and was a part-time switchboard operator at Hudson-Belk in Raleigh. Marie was also active in her church throughout her life in- cluding Missionary Union, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and Senior Adult Choir. She and George were early members of Longview Baptist Church in Raleigh and later Aversboro Road Baptist Church in Garner, NC. Marie is survived by her three sons and their wives, George Gary and Joanne Davis of Raleigh, Ronnie and Diana Davis of Garner, and Lynn and Beverly Davis of Holly Springs; three grandchildren Kevin Da- vis of Raleigh, Jessica Davis of Raleigh, and Christopher Davis of Holly Springs; one great-grandson, Jackson, one brother, Paul Dean McLamb of Salemburg, one sister Patricia Berry of Salemburg, and many nieces and nephews. The family will be at Bryan Lee Funeral Home in Garner, NC, on Friday, July 13, 2012, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM to celebrate life and her impact on others.

Noulis age 77 fell asleep in the Lord July 11, 2012 at his home in North Myrtle Beach, SC. James was born in Drama, Greece and is the son of Leoni- das Noulis and Photini Econo- mou. He is survived by his wife, Ro- berta Noulis; daughters, Elaine Noulis and her sons Henry and James Hobgood of Raleigh, Di- anna Callas (George) of Atlan- ta, and Mary Noulis (Joel) and her children Michael Ryder, Johanna, and Tyler Ward of Holly Springs; step-daughters, Dorothy Cooper (Bob) and son Corey of Myrtle Beach, and Ju- lie Brown (West) and son Law- son of Wilmington. He is also survived by his sister, Diana Papadopoulos; and her daugh- ters of Thessaloniki, Greece and his nephew Akis Pistiolis and his daughters, also of Thes- saloniki. He came to this country at the age of 19 and then gradu- ated from SMU in 1957.
He and his family moved to Raleigh in the early and he was well known as the General Manag- er of the Royal Villa Hotel on Glenwood Ave. During the he also co-founded American Hotel Management Associates, from which he retired. Sally was the oldest of three children, and the only daugh- ter, of Lynwood and Sallie Tay- lor Bryan of Oxford, North Carolina. She was a graduate of Peace Col- lege in Raleigh, North Carolina, and the Uni- versity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After graduation, Sally married and worked at the Administration while her husband attended law school.
When her hus- band subsequently entered the Army, she became a devoted military wife supporting his career. During those years she moved with her family many times within the United States and overseas. After retire- ment, they returned to her na- tive North Carolina. As an avid Anglophile, Sally traveled to England several times and de- lighted in all things pertaining to Churchill and Dickens. She enjoyed her remaining years in the company of books and cats.

He was born in Duplin County on May 8, 1932, to Ce- cil and Chestnutt and attended Mag- nolia Schools.
After school he entered the Navy and spent 4 years during the with North Korea. After he left the Navy, he re- turned to Wilmington, NC, and attended Wilmington College earning an Associates Degree in Engineering Technology. Af- ter college, Howard relocated to Raleigh, NC, accepting a po- sition with L.E. Wooten Co. He worked with L.E.
Wooten Co. for 10 years, then applied for and accepted a position with Carolina Power Light Co. (a predecessor of Progress En- ergy). He remained with until retirement. Howard was a very active member of Trin- ity Baptist Church for over 40 years.
Howard is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Kathryn, and two children, Kenneth and his wife Kim and their children Chandler and Noah of Cary, NC. Melissa and her husband Richard and their two children Cameron and Leah of Asheboro, NC. Howard was predeceased by one child, Sandra, twin sister to Melissa. Howard was also predeceased by his parents, Cecil and Ef- and siblings Edith, Edna, Elbert, Catherine, Norwood, Davis, and William.
