To the Editor A recent article1 reported a positive effect of a traditional Chinese drug (Tongxinluo) on outcomes of patients with acute myocardial infarction. Tongxinluo is a mixture of powders and extracts from multiple plant and insect products, so the concentration of active components may vary. Therefore, we have concerns about the stability of its effect. For example, the extract of plant Butea superba (Roxb) was more effective for erectile dysfunction than sildenafil in the first part of a study,2 but was not more effective in the second part of the study when another batch of B superba extract was used. The authors concluded that the first batch of B superba extract contained phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor, while the second preparation did not. This study demonstrated the variable effects of plant extracts due to differences in their active components and their concentration in these products. We believe that special regulation for “natural” drugs must be implemented to resolve this issue.
