Good remains best

choice, opponent’s

silence speaks volumesDear Editor,

It is baffling to me as to why Congressman Bob Good has a Republican challenger. Yes, of course, candidates have the right to run for office, even when it does not make sense, but in this case, millions of dollars are being squandered on this race that could be used to support other Republican candidates.

As citizens, it is our responsibility to elect candidates who most closely align with our values and we must hold them accountable. Candidates typically run on platforms and if once elected, if they do not honor their commitments to us on the issues most important to us, we have the duty to hold them accountable. If they do not listen to the people, we must be prepared to challenge them at the ballot box.

People are also reading…

But that is not the situation we have in this primary.

What did Congressman Good commit to do? He said he would protect our constitutional rights, he would serve the citizens of the district honorably, and would provide robust constituent services.

What is his record? Congressman Good has been a courageous defender of our constitutional rights including our second amendment rights. You do not need to take my word for it. He is endorsed by a lengthy list of gun rights organizations — NRA-PVF, Gun Owners of America, American Firearms Association, and the National Association of Gun Rights. Plus, he has a 100% rating from Virginia Citizens Defense League. They all chose Congressman Good over his opponent.

Congressman Good has been willing to stand in the gap to stop progressive policies, even at the risk of others misconstruing and twisting his votes. As he says, “this seat does not belong to me – it belongs to you, the citizens of the fifth district.” Congressman Good understands what our founders meant by keeping the republic. He has made great personal sacrifices to honorably serve the citizens of the fifth district.

Constituent services have been a strength of Congressman Good’s tenure in office. To date. he has resolved almost 7,000 cases that have returned $25,228,379 to the citizens of the fifth district. These are not handouts; this was money owed to citizens from the federal government.

John McGuire’s history isn’t nearly as positive. Serious financial allegations about his campaign accounts have been filed with both federal and state authorities. He violated federal election rules twice. There are documented allegations of missing donations, accepting illegal donations, spending money from his state account for his congressional race, and using a treasurer who had been deceased for eight months. He even opened his Senate campaign account using this same deceased treasurer. The candidate is responsible for his campaign and John McGuire has tough questions to answer.

To these alleged financial irregularities add the fact that McGuire promised constituents that he would not challenge Congressman Good. There are many well respected Goochland citizens who have stated publicly that McGuire lied to their face. Is this honorable behavior?

McGuire has not committed to any policies. This is a great tactic to prevent citizens from holding him accountable. Looking at his website, I found platitudes but no substantive thought or discussion of in depth policy positions to address the problems facing our country today.

Lastly, McGuire’s constituent services are nonexistent. He is a citizen of Goochland County, but you would never know it. He is a perennial no-show for event after event. For someone who likes to brag on his own accomplishments, he is never once mentioned constituent services.

Congressman Good is a brave and faithful member of Congress. He is a budget hawk; he wants our border secured; and wants to stop financing endless wars. Do not let out of state consultants and donors buy this seat. This seat belongs to the people and the people will decide how they want to be represented.

God Bless Congressman Good. I am praying for victory next Tuesday.

Sincerely,

Susan Lascolette

Good’s record on supporting veterans,

gun rights is clearDear Editor,

June 18 is this upcoming Tuesday and luckily, the mailers, tv, radio and attack ads will come to an end. The Congressional race for the Republican nomination for the 5th Congressional seat will be decided and, based on what you’ve seen and heard, it may be difficult to determine fact from fiction.

Federal spending legislation allows multiple spending opportunities inserted to Bills that have absolutely nothing to do with the Bill. This is in contrast to Virginia spending legislation, which does not allow this. So, when a Congressman votes against a spending measure that contains unlimited spending, spending for organizations on our terrorist watch list and other large pork items, it does not mean the Congressman is against other, lower cost spending items that have been inserted for political purposes. Unfortunately, John McGuire appears to be unaware of this as he states falsehoods about who the Congressman supports based on these votes.

Congressman Bob Good has spent more time with veterans’ organizations than any other group. He is a huge supporter of veterans and their families, in spite of his opponents’ false claims to the contrary.

Congressman Bob Good has been a staunch supporter of citizens’ 2nd Amendment rights and exercises them himself. Apparently, his opponent does not care, and misrepresents the Congressman’s position.

Congressman Bob Good has a long history of supporting President Trump and has during this 2024 election race since January of 2024. He endorsed Trump in 2020, even though Trump endorsed the Congressman’s opponent. Then in 2022, Trump endorsed Bob Good for Congress. In 2023, early on in the Republican Presidential primary race, Bob Good was asked, and agreed to support another Presidential candidate. In January 2024, that candidate withdrew from the race and within 30 minutes endorsed Trump. Congressman Good still supports Trump today in spite of Trump’s endorsem*nt of his opponent. These are the facts yet his opponent calls the Congressman a “never-Trumper.”

Facts matter. Half-truths are lies. I have known John McGuire for 8-10 years. Unfortunately, I have seen him go from a candidate I supported in the past, whom I respected as a “we the people” person, into what he has become today... A “me the person” politician. Running in his seventh (7) political campaign in 7 years, McGuire has sold his soul to the highest bidder, and this time it is disgruntled out of work former Speaker of The House, Kevin McCarthey, who showed his lack of fortitude by quitting, surrendering and resigning from the House once he didn’t get his way. A disgruntled former political employee should not allow personal vendettas to get in the way of the Good of the country!

I am the Presidential Elector for Donald J Trump to the Electoral College representing Trump, and I proudly support Congressman Bob Good and President Donald J Trump!

Residents should know the facts when it comes to Library Board

Dear Editor,

Fear and panic get our attention. Good news is boring. Whipping people into a frenzy is a popular tactic used by a very vocal, well organized little group in our county who cry wolf and panic about our library and schools. I was personally maligned in the latest hysterical rant in a 5/29/2024 letter to the editor entitled “Pamunkey Regional Library is in Trouble.”

First of all, I am delighted to report that Barbara Young, who was also vilified in the letter, has been unanimously re-appointed for another four years as one of two Goochland representatives to the Pamunkey Regional Library Governing Board of Trustees. In the “5-Alarm Fire” letter, among other fabrications, the author falsely accused Barbara and I of supporting a “censorship proposal.” Once again, fear mongering at its finest. The document she refers to was a draft of a working proposal at a work session, not an official meeting. It was not ready for public scrutiny, discussion, or vote. If the author of this letter chose to share facts instead of fear and doom, they would know that no books have been banned, no censorship has occurred, and the Library Board is not and never has been responsible for book selection.

Barbara Young and I are honored to represent Goochland on the PRL Board of Trustees. We love the library and desire to keep it strong for many years to come for the citizens of this county. We also pledge financial responsibility and accountability with taxpayer dollars. We believe in free access to books and materials. We believe the parent is the best person to select books for young children and should have access to as much information about the books as possible to make informed decisions.

These statements above are not as alluring, provocative and frightening as “the Library is in Trouble!” “They are Banning books!” “They Support Censorship!” BUT they happen to be the truth. Something the author of the letter and fellow alarmists pay little attention to.
