Arthur, William H. Taft, Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert C. Hoover, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S.

Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower. I Beginning in the 1960s, schools in the Port Huron Area School District were named for well-known local residents (Crull, Edison), Indian tribes or heritage (Chippewa, Michigamme, Indian Woods) or places (Fort Gratiot, Port Huron Northern, Holland Woods). NAME Continued from Page 1B name all existing schools after presidents. The change would take effect Jan.

1, 1893. Prior to that, schools were named for the city wards in which they were built. The first presidential schools were the Jackson School (the First Ward School), Washington (the Second Ward School), Adams (the Fourth Ward School), Van Buren (North Sixth Ward School), Jefferson (the South Fifth Ward School), Madison (the South Sixth Ward School), Harrison, Monroe (the North Fifth Ward' School), Tyler, Polk and Taylor. Between 1893 and 1954, every school built in Port Huron bore a president's name. Joining the lineup were Cleveland, Grant, Garfield, Roosevelt, Tyler, Fillmore, Pierce, Van Buren, Lincoln, Buchanan and Woodrow Wilson.

The last was McKinley Elementary on Riverside Drive in 1954. Although the reason for the name changes remains a mystery, Superintendent Larry Moeller says: "Legend has it that they were changed to the names of presidents to avoid city politics and naming the schools after local he says. "Many times high schools were named after the town, but the intermediate and elementary schools often were named after people in the town." When the city and nearby township schools merged in the late 1960s, the practice changed and the district began naming buildings after local residents such as Thomas Edison and Howard Crull, a former school superintendent. "I rather liked it as a child, having all of the schools named after presidents," said Jane Rae Port Huron, who attended the son and Jefferson schools. "It gave you a sense of history."
